How to Play Needle in a Haystack

Needle in a Haystack is a free 3D browser game. You dig through a giant haystack straw by straw, sell the hay for coins, buy better tools and upgrades, and search for the one needle hidden inside. It runs on PC, phones and tablets, with no download.

The goal

Every haystack hides exactly one needle, and it stays in the same place. Dig your way in, find it and grab it. Each find takes you to a new, bigger haystack, until you have beaten all 12 stages.

Dig, sell, upgrade

1. Dig. Hold the mouse button (or tap Work on a touch screen) to grab hay. Every single straw is real: what you pull out goes into your bag, and the hay above it slides down.
2. Sell. When your bag is full, walk to the Hay Depot and press E (or Use). One straw is one hay, and the depot pays coins for every hay you bring.
3. Upgrade. Walk to the Hay Shop and press E. Spend your coins on better tools and upgrades, then dig faster and deeper.

That loop is the heart of the game: every upgrade makes the next trip bigger, so the haystack shrinks faster and faster.

Tools

You start with your Work Gloves. The Hay Shop unlocks stronger tools as you sell more hay. Each tool digs in its own way:

Switch tools with the number keys 1–0 or the mouse wheel.

The Hay Shop and upgrades

Besides new tools, the Hay Shop sells upgrades for your farmer, for example Grip Strength (more hay per grab), Work Rate (work faster), Carry Capacity (a bigger bag), Work Boots (run faster) and Bale Quality (the depot pays more). Every tool also has its own upgrades. Prices rise with each level, so pick what helps you most right now.

The Field Book (B) has Contracts: fill their rings for bonus coins.

Finding the needle

The needle hides deep in the hay. Dig until you see it shine, walk close and press E (or Use) to grab it. A find pays a big reward. The Needle Care upgrade makes that reward even bigger.

Prestige and the 12 stages

After a find you can prestige: you start again on a new, bigger haystack and earn Renown. Renown buys upgrades that you keep forever, so every stage starts stronger than the last. The campaign has 12 stages. Beat all 12 and you become a Needle Champion and unlock the Champion Frame for your name.

Rare hay, diamonds and the Store

Some straws are rare: Soggy, Frost, Gilded, Emerald, Amethyst, Prism, Shadow, Ember and the very rare Starlight. Rare hay gives you diamonds. You also get diamonds from new stages and the daily reward.

Spend diamonds in the Store (G) on looks, boosts and the Hay Drone, a little helper that digs hay for you while you play.

Races

In a race, everyone digs in the same haystack and the first player to grab the needle wins. Open Race in the main menu:

• vs Bots: race computer players, also offline.
• Quick Match: race other players online right now, up to 4 in one race.
• Create a room and share its room code to race your friends.

Races are still in beta. With an account, your wins count on the Global, Country and Friends leaderboards.

Daily Event

Every day there is a new needle hunt. Find the needle within 10 minutes to win that day's limited prize.

Saving and accounts

You can play as a guest without an account. Your farm is then saved in your own browser. If you want to keep it on another device, count your race wins or add friends, make a free account with your email or sign in with Google (you must be 13 or older). Your farm is then saved in the cloud too.

Move with the stick on the left and drag on the right side to look around (you can swap sides in Settings). Work turns digging on or off, Use sells, opens the shop and grabs the needle, and ↑ jumps. MENU pauses the game.
